Ma Bohème

Reflections on the Bohemian Paris

Outside my window was Paris. I was half asleep after a night of celebration and Champagne. In my hand was Bohemian Paris by Jerrold Seigel, one of my few resolutions for the New Year. I was proud to be starting a new year without a hangover.  Seigel’s book immersed me in mid-19th century France for the entire day, its society fragmenting, jobs scarce, artists without patrons and new technologies displacing large portions of its economy.

I looked up, caught my reflection. What kind of life and time was I really in?
