REFINING YOUR ROADMAP

PROBLEMSurf-Map

You’ve completed a rough version of a personal roadmap, but you find it a bit sloppy and even confusing. Is this all there is?

SOLUTION

Drawing a personal map is an iterative process, where you constantly refine the route to your final destination. Sometimes you hit an obstacle and can’t get beyond it. You’ve got to brainstorm ways to reach your goal. Or, other times you simply have a better way to go. Whatever the reason, editing your roadmap can be quick and enlightening. In the process of refining your map, you refine your own thinking about your destination.

DISCUSSION

There can be a number of things wrong with your roadmap. The key is re-doing the ones that need fixing up while leaving the items that work as they are.

There can be a number of things wrong with your roadmap. The key is re-doing the ones that need fixing up while leaving the items that work as they are.

  1. With your rough roadmap in your drawing app, save it to a new name. Use a version number or the date to indicate that it is an older rendition of your map.
  2. Now, switch your pen to red to mark the pictures or routes that need changing.
  3. Follow the route from beginning to the end. Get a sense of the direction and of each of the pictures that you drew.
  4. For the pictures that need more work, place a red dot next to the picture. Don’t cross the picture out since you may need to preserve a portion of it.
  5. When you are finished, ask yourself if any of the stops along the way were incongruous or confusing. Were any of the stops out of order or simply not needed?
  6. Now select the pictures that need work. Can the picture be tweaked? Or do you need to re-do it completely? If so, erase the old picture and do a new one.
  7. By cutting and pasting pictures, you can move the order of the junctures around on the screen.
  8. Add or subtract steps.
  9. Now re-draw the arrows from the Start to the destination at the bottom.

This refined map should look a lot better. Make sure that you keep your pictures simple and that the map is instantly recognizable. In other words, you should be able to display it on your device and know exactly where you are going.
