REFINING YOUR SKETCH

Surf-PlanPROBLEM

You’ve carried your quick sketch around with you, but it is still not right. In fact, when you look at it, you don’t feel you are making any progress with getting to where you want to be. What’s up?

STEPS

No worries. This was just a first cut and certainly far from the final version. It’s time to refine that snapshot, adding more detail, making sure that it resonates with you.

DISCUSSION

Sketches are just the on-ramps to more detailed maps. You will soon be drawing these, but for now, you are just getting a handle on where you are going. Ask yourself: are you really happy where you are, doing what you are doing? On a scale of 1 to 10, is it where you can spend the rest of your life? Of course, there are so many things we could be, could do, could have, but life is not always fair. And far from perfect.

  1. With your first snapshot in hand, draw another one. Yes, from scratch. This time get it right, that is, closer to what you have in mind.
  2. Ask yourself: Where do I want to be in two or three years? Are you writing, or painting, or writing code, or drinking espressos nonstop? What is it that would make you really jump for joy if you did?
  3. In the middle of your new page, draw it!
  4. Now, fanning out from the destination, draw in the details.

This is your new snapshot that will become the basis of your first road map. Remember: concentrate simply on the endpoint at this stage. Down the line, you will articulate a gameplan to get there. This will become your roadmap.
