What is priming?

In Blink, Malcolm Gladwell insists major decisions in life can be made in a split-second, a blink, with great success.  Our subconscious gives us clues as to the correct paths we should follow.  George Soros invested millions based on lower back pain.  Alan Greenspan had recurring stomach pains that led him to monetary policy.  (Although based on his subsequent mea culpa, an antacid might have been a better choice.)

More importantly, we can give ourselves a shove in the right direction by envisioning the right stimuli. Social scientists throw around the term priming to describe the use of a social construct to influence one’s perceptions and subsequent behavior.
