YOUR FIRST ROADMAP

Surf-MapPROBLEM

With your sketches on paper, you’ve developed a clear picture of where you want to go. But the problem still remains of just how to get there.

SOLUTION

Drawing your first roadmap requires a bit of discipline and patience. You may find that you move things around, or have very sloppy drawings. Don’t worry about this. The first map is a trial of sorts. It will give you a general idea of how to get to your destination in broad brush strokes. (I mean this in figurative sense.)

DISCUSSION

The purpose of a roadmap is to plot the route to your final destination. Although you will be tempted to leave the route off your drawing, or to try to make multiple routes to get to your destination (for example, by doing more than one thing at a time), keep it simple to start.

STEPS

The purpose of a roadmap is to plot the route to your final destination. Although you will be tempted to leave the route off your drawing, or to try to make multiple routes to get to your destination (for example, by doing more than one thing at a time), keep it simple to start.

  1. Using the sketch of your destination, draw your endpoint near the bottom of the page.
  2. Now focus on each step to get there. Draw a simple picture of the step or component. For example, if it is learning to surf, your first step may be saving up some money for it. You can always change the order later.
  3. Refer back to your sketch of all of the components of your destination. Make sure each one is addressed by a step in your map. Move on to the next step, until you have several rows of steps you need to follow to get to where you want to be.
  4. Since you are using a drawing app for this, move around your drawings in the order you prefer. Add or subtract steps.
  5. Now draw the arrows from the Start to the destination.

Presto, you’ve just completed your first roadmap.
